Flat Stanley has arrived in Washington, DC at the home of Samantha's Nana and Papa. We took him to the National Zoo to visit the pandas and plan to take him on a car ride past the White House, the Capitol, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Jefferson Memorial. Maybe we'll take him to the Air and Space Museum too. Samantha loves it there.
ReplyDeleteFlat Stanley made a surprise visit to Orono,Minnesota to visit Alex's Nana Daina.Stanley is surprised at how much snow there is in Minnesota, but being a northern state next to the Canadian border it is to be expected.
ReplyDeleteStanley said that as he flew into Minneapolis he could see the collapsed Metrodome roof. I assured him that it will be repaired by the time the Vikings play football this fall. This week-end we plan to take Stanley on a drive to see eagles on the banks of the Mississippi River which originates in Minnesota. On our way to the river,we'll make a quick stop to show him the Mall of America.Alex wants to go to the Mall this summer.
Flat Stanley has arrived in Houston, Texas at the home of the Mensahs. It is bedtime for Kiyanna so tomorrow Flat Stanley's first visit of the city will be to Askew Elementary. My first day at Askew was fun; so Flat Stanley don't be nervous.
ReplyDeleteAunt Michele said that Henry Stern's Flat Stanley has arrived safely in Cary, North Carolina. Cary is a suburb of Raleigh, which is the capital of North Carolina. Flat Stanley is very happy to be here because when he arrived it was 72 degrees outside. It is already spring, with daffodils, forsythia, plum trees and cherry trees in bloom. Flat Stanley was glad to see bright colors in the landscape after a gray winter.
ReplyDeleteIn Cary there are lots of parks and bike trails. This morning Flat Stanley got to go for a walk around a lake and saw a bunch of Cormorants sitting in a tree. On Thursday, Flat Stanley is going to go on a field trip with the Cary Elementary 5th grade. We will be traveling down to the coast, about 125 miles away, to see the USS North Carolina Battleship in Wilmington, NC. Flat Stanley will then tour the NC Aquarium at FT Fisher and then go explore the beach. I sure hope Flat Stanley brought his bathing suit!
Flat Stanley arrived safe and sound in Chicago today. His landing was a little bumpy since this is the “Windy City.” He is visiting Caroline's cousin Charlotte. He has heard a lot about Illinois. He learned that Illinois was home to the first skyscraper, the first Ferris wheel, the first aquarium and more importantly the first McDonald’s. He cannot wait to get some fries! He told Charlotte he is interested in meeting the people here. He heard that some fairly important people were born in Illinois. Among them are President Obama who lives not far from Charlotte when he is not in Washington, Ronald Reagan, Ulysses S. Grant and Abraham Lincoln. Flat Stanley will set out on his first Chicago tour tomorrow and we will let you know how it goes.
ReplyDeleteEric Smith is my grandson and he sent Flat Stanley to me in Boynton Beach.Florida where the weather is 80degrees and sunny. I plan to take Flat Stanley to the beach to enjoy the ocean and then maybe to Disney World which I know is one of Eric's favorite places. Wherever we go I know he will enjoy himself because of the beautiful weather we are experiencing
ReplyDeleteMayanka Dhingra will be glad to know that Flat Stanley has arrived safe and sound at the home of Joy and Madhavi in San Francisco, California. California is also known as the Golden State and the El Dorado state. We plan to take Flat Stanley on a road trip across California from Sea World in San Diego to Hollywood and then drive up to Sequoia National Park. We then drive through the curvy roads of Route 1 from Pebble Beach to San Francisco across the Golden Gate bridge.
ReplyDeleteYesterday, Flat Stanley got hungry, so we took him out for some Cioppino, a fish stew that originated in San Francisco.
Flat Stanley was amazed to learn that California is the most populous state in the US and that gold was discovered near San Francisco in 1848 leading to the famous " california gold rush".
Flat Stanley is really enjoying his time in NC. The first thing he did this morning was climb a plum tree in our back yard. Then he stopped to smell the daffodils. They don't have much scent he found out.
ReplyDeleteIn the late morning Flat Stanley went on a field trip to Hillsborough, NC. Hillsborough, like Cary is in the piedmont region of NC and is about 30 miles north- west of Cary. Where Cary is a large town, with a population of approximately 130,000 people, Hillsborough is a small town with a population of about 6000 people and an area of 4.6 miles. Here are some interesting facts about Hillsborough:
Prior to European settlement, the Eno and Occaneechi Native Americans lived there along the Eno River.
The town was founded in 1754.
The town was used as the home of the North Carolina state legislature during the American Revolution.
Elizabeth Keckley, a Burwell family slave bought her freedom in 1855. She was a dressmaker and became a friend to Mary Todd Lincoln. She also wrote a famous memoir about being a slave. But she is not the only writer to have lived in Hillsborough. A lot of famous authors have lived there, like Lee Smith, Allan Gurganus, Michael Malone, Annie Dillard, Hal Crowther and Frances Mayers, just to name a few.
At the end of the Civil War, Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston traveled east from Hillsborough, while Union General William Sherman traveled west from Raleigh(through Cary) to meet in Durham at the home of James and Nancy Bennett to negotiate the terms of the largest Confederate troop surrender of the Civil War. This effectively ended the Civil War.
That's most of what Flat Stanley learned about Hillsborough today.
One other thing he did was go on a walk on the Poet's walk at Ayrmount which is an historic plantation in Hillsborough. He had a great time! Aunt Michele is going to send his pictures to your class.
It has been two days since Flat Stanley arrived in Houston and we've had lots to do, so today we will share the experience. Flat Stanley had the best time at Askew Elementary. He was SO excited to visit the 1st grade with me, Kiyanna. Flat Stanley sat with me at my desk and he watched me do my class work. He met a lot of my friends but my teacher, Mrs. Monroe didn't get to meet him; she was absent. My best friends in my class are Susanna and Lesly but the whole class wanted to play with Stanley; I had to make sure they were gentle, so they ONLY got to stare at him. I thought it was funny because D' Metri thought Flat Stanley looked like President Obama. Maybe one day Mekhi can be the President but he has to wait until after Mr. Obama and let us vote. We learned Presidents are voted by the people who want him to lead. I read about why Stanley is called Flat Stanley. So when Stanley came to school with me I made him eat lots of food; he didn't mind eatting it from my Tinker Bell Lunch kit beccause it had lots of good food. Mommy came to eat lunch with us. My mother brought my sister, Kimora too! She took us some pictures; Kimora was starring at Stanley, probably because we were talking and taking pictures of a paper boy. She looked scared! I have a secret to share; shush, mommy spilled a little bit of my fruits on Flat Stanley but cleaned him well and Flat Stanley still looks happy. Thursday, March 10 is our Askew Skate Night. The school hosts special events to raise money for the school. The last BIG fund raiser we were supposed to raise I think $15,000 and we doubled our goal. It was fun but hard. My mother, sister, and I went door to door. I sold ALL my sheet; I did good. For the skate night, I invited my best friends and Flat Stanley. Hopefully Mr. Abraham, our Principal will come because Friday, March 11 is our Principals last day; he is going to a new school. Next week is SPRING BREAK! For one whole week, no school!I will make sure I send you guys some pictures. Don't forget to wear something green for St. Patrick's Day, Thursday March 17th!

ReplyDeleteFlat Stanley arrived to our house in Great Falls, Virginia to cousins Evan, Ben, & Audrey Preta. We took Flat Stanley to Great Falls Park which has the Potomac River. The Potomac River separates Virginia, Maryland, & D.C. (he did not see the D.C. part!).
Virginia is where George Washington and Thomas Jefferson have homes. You can visit George Washington's house at Mount Vernon and Thomas Jefferson's home at Monticello.
Eight United States Presidents were born in Virginia: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, William Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor, and Woodrow Wilson.
We hope Flat Stanley continues to have a fun journey!!!
Hi Kiran,
ReplyDeleteFlat Stanley has arrived here in Pensacola, Florida to visit with Auntie Megan, Uncle Drew and cousin Annalise. We are so excited to meet him and show him around Pensacola! The weather here is very nice--70 degrees and Flat Stanley put his bathing suit on and took a dip in the Gulf of Mexico ( there were no pictures- he was embarrassed of his lack of a tan. Ha Ha). Flat Stanley was pleased to see that the beach was clean and that the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has not ruined the beautiful beach.
Today, Flat Stanley also learned some interesting facts about the state of Florida. Florida was discovered by Juan Ponce de Leon ( a Spanish explorer) in 1513 and he called the area la Florida in honor of Pascua Florida or feast of the flowers ( Spain's Easter time celebration). He also learned that the state animal is the Florida Panther and it is endangered. The state marine mammal is the manatee and the state flower is the orange blossom.
Flat Stanley has really enjoyed playing with your cousin Annalise. Thank you for sending him our way! Love Auntie Megan, Uncle Drew and Annalise Armani
Today is the first day of Spring Break; Monday, March 14th. Mekhi's Flat Stanley, Kiyanna and mommy were writing a book on "thinkitinkitpublishing.com". Mekhi's Flat Stanley has enjoyed Askew's Skate Night on Thursday, March 10th. Church on Saturday, March 12th and playing at Harwin's Public park; Sunday, March 13th with mommy, daddy, & Kimora, Kiyanna's little sister. Kimora is still trying learn how to play at the park. We didn't see any bluebonnet flowers; Texas flower is the bluebonnets. Before bed on Sunday we ALL watched a movie, "Space Chimps part 2".
ReplyDeleteThis coming Tuesday, March 15th Kimora, Kiyanna, Mekhi's Flat Stanley, and mommy will go to the public library for Kimora's storytime with Ms. Meg. Then later get all dressed up to take family pictures for the church directory. Mekhi's Flat Stanley is waiting on Kimora and Kiyanna's Uncle Mike to send the new address; Mekhi's next visiting place. Before Mekhi's Flat Stanley leaves, Kiyanna will share with Flat Stanley a few things about Houston, Texas that we haven't visited or mentioned already. The Texas flag has only one star; it's called the lone star flag because Texas was one of the last States to join the United States.
We have a new place to visit; it's called Discovery Green. This place was made to make people think about taking care of our State; going green. We have a space center in Webster, Texas and if you happen to visit San Antonio go to Fiesta Texas or Sea World. Kiyanna told Flat Stanley they are REALLY fun places to go. This coming thursday, March 17th wear green, if you like, for St. Patrick's Day. Fun facts; President George Washington let us celebrate the 1st St. Patrick's Day in the United States. St. Patrick's Day began in Ireland.
The Mensah Family had fun with Mekhi's Flat Stanley; especially, Kiyanna. She had mommy draw herself just like Stanley; Flat, SO Mekhi's Flat Stanley will have his cousin's company as he travels to his next location. Pictures are coming real soon!
Alex's new baby cousin Patrick was so thrilled to see Flat Stanley arrive in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin this past weekend. It is starting to feel like spring after a very long, cold and snowy winter. Now robins and red-winged blackbirds are returning and tulips should be blooming soon. We plan to take Flat Stanley for a drive to Madison, our state capital, where there are a lot of protesters marching. We also plan to take him to Green Bay to see the Lombardi Trophy at Lambeau Field, the home of the Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers. We'll probaby get a bratwurst and some cheese curds for lunch and a beer-battered fish fry for dinner. On the way home, we'll stop for custard at the Kiltie drive-in! We're gonna skip gambling at one of the many Indian casinos on this trip.
ReplyDeleteMaddie Morse will be happy to know that Flat Stanley arrived safely at Cousin Romy Rosen's house in Portland Oregon.
ReplyDeleteFlat Stanley wanted to go right away to see the Fremont Bridge, one of Portland's seven famous bridges. He wanted to see them all!
It began to rain as we drove home from touring the bridges. It rained so much that our cul de sac was completely flooded! But, Portlanders are used to rain because it rains a lot.
Because of the rain, Flat Stanley and Romy stayed inside for the rest of the day and read stories. Flat Stanley didn't know that one of his favorite author's, Beverly Cleary, was born in Oregon. He thought that was pretty cool!
Flat Stanley can't wait to come back to Portland. He wants to sample some of the food carts he saw during our tour of the bridges.
Love, Cousin Romy
Hi everyone,
ReplyDeleteSebastian's Flat Stanley arrived in Wasilla after a 5000 mile trip from the Town School in New York City. It's probably the longest trip he has taken. He was very excited to see that we still have snow. We are going to go to our cabin to snow machine and go ice fishing. I wrote a story about our last ice fishing trip on my blog at mariansjournal.blogspot.com.
Flat Stanley came at a good time because we have more sun now and it is not as cold. In Dec. we only had 4 hours of sun but after Dec. 21 the days get a little longer everday until Mar 21, the spring equinox, when we have 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night. Then they keep getting longer until June 21, the summer solstice, when we have 22 hours of daylight. People play midnight baseball and do other things to stay up all night to celebrate Summer Solstice. After the Summer Solstice the days start getting shorter again until the winter solstice when we only have daylight for 4 hours. Then it starts the days getting longer all over again.
Alaska is the biggest state with the least amount of people. If you put a map of Alaska over a map of the United States it would cover about 1/5 of it. But much of Alaska is pure wilderness full of bears and moose and caribou and wolves and fox and wolverines and beavers and martins and weasles, but no people.
When we come back from our cabin trip I'll let you know how Flat Stanley enjoyed it.
Hey Cousin Alexandra,
ReplyDeleteYou and your class will be happy to know that Mr. Flat Stanley arrived at the busiest airport in the world, Atlanta/Hartsfield Airport, by a post office jet and the came to our mailbox at 846 Lullwater Road in Atlanta. You have visited us many times for Thanksgiving but did you know that just down the block are some beautiful parks designed by the same man who built Central Park, Frederick Law Olmstead? We celebrate his gift to Alanta every spring when the flowers bloom (like now) and have a big party to raise money for the parks. By the way, Mr. Stanley is having a tough time with the pollen from all the flowers and trees that are starting to bloom right now. We have at least 4 different kinds of azaleas in our yard, including a "native" azalea which looks more like a tree than a bush! Flat says he is anxious to get to his next destination in Bethesda, Maryland to see my sister, Sherry. I wanted to take him over to Emory University and the Centers for Disease Control, which are just down the street from us, but he is too busy blowing his nose. Love to your family and all your classmates.
Your cousin
Stu Segerman
Max LoBue's Flat Stanley is visiting us in Potomac, Maryland. He came to us from Max's Aunt Ellie's house in Virginia. I am Ellie's sister (Evan and Ben's other Aunt). The weather is starting to get warmer so Stanley has spent a lot of time outside. Maryland has many different types of places to explore! We have the Chesapeake Bay, Potomac River and beaches; there are mountains and Deep Creek Lake in western Maryland; and Washington, DC is our next door neighbor. There is a lot of history in Maryland! Baltimore is here as well as Annapolis which is our capital. The Star Spangled Banner was written while Francis Scott Key watched the battle of Fort McHenry which is in Baltimore. Although Stanley is continuing on his journey and won't be staying with us, we hope you'll come visit Maryland soon! Cheryl
ReplyDeleteJack.
ReplyDeleteNelson from Atlanta, Georgia.
Flat Stanley arrived in Atlanta in time for Nelson’s mom’s birthday and had a big celebration. Then Flat Stanley visited the Coca-Cola General Store because Coca-Cola was invented in Atlanta and its headquarters is here, too. Flat Stanley and Nelson enjoyed a Coca-Cola with some peanuts in it, a long-standing Georgia tradition. Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, hails from Plains, Georgia, and was a peanut farmer. Flat Stanley looked for a peach, since Georgia is known as the Peach State, but peaches are not in season yet.
Hi Everyone!
ReplyDeleteMax's Flat Stanley arrived safe and sound here in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He's been busy hanging around and checking out how different life is here from New York City!
The first person he met was Stinky Pete! Pete's not a person though, he's a skunk that was rejected by the fur trade so now he just hangs around. He has really soft fur! Stanley also got to pet Simon, the horse that lives next door.
Grace took Stanley to school one day so that he could meet Tulip, a kangaroo that was rescued.
Michigan is known as America's High Five! Do you know why? Look on a map and see if you can figure it out!
Michigan is the only place in the world with a floating post office. The J. W. Westcott II is the only boat in the world that delivers mail to ships while they are still underway. They have been operating for 125 years.
Michigan is the only state that touches 4 of the 5 Great Lakes.
In 1817 the University of Michigan was the 1st university established by any state. GO BLUE!
Stanley is leaving tomorrow for Spring Break! He may be a bit hot wearing his polyester golf pants!
Love The Carvettes
Leonardo’s Flat Stanley arrived in the mailbox two days ago for quick trip to Denver, Colorado with cousins Igor and Jessica. There are a couple of reasons why Flat Stanley was very eager to travel here:
ReplyDelete• Colorado has the lowest obesity rate of all 50 states so there are lots of thin people here. Still, we haven’t ever met anyone as paper-thin as Flat Stanley!
• Denver is the Mile High city – we are living 5,280 feet up in the sky, so the air here is THIN. Flat Stanley got a kick out of that.
• Denver is built on high plains, making it one of the FLATTEST of all American Cities!
• Denver is a Super-Sunny city – 300 days of sunshine a year! That’s more sun than Miami Beach or San Diego, California. Before we went out to tour Denver with Flat Stanley, we slathered sunscreen on his face and gave him a pair of flat 3-D glasses since regular sunglasses kept sliding off (sorry about all that sunscreen, Flat).
We went for a walk with Flat Stanley in Washington Park, which is our favorite place in Denver. Built in the early 1900’s right in the city of Denver, Washington Park has two lakes, walking and biking trails, tennis courts and two playgrounds. We met a lot of friendly dogs on our walk, and watched flocks of Canada Geese playing in the lake.
Flat Stanley was in a hurry to get to his next destination, so first thing this morning we sent him on his way.
Cheers,
Igor and Jessica

ReplyDeleteHello 3rd graders at Town School,
After many days of traveling, I arrived in California in mid-March. I have been staying in the Monterey Peninsula which is located on the central coast of California and comprises the cities of Monterey, Carmel, Pacific Grove, Seaside & the resort community of Pebble Beach. We are approximately 110 miles south of San Francisco & north of Los Angeles. Monterey was founded in 1777 by missionary Junipero Serra. Monterey is home to some of the oldest buildings, adobes, as well as California's first theatre. California is very diverse with oceans, mountains & desert.
Monterey Bay is a National Marine Sanctuary. The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) is a Federally protected marine area offshore of California's central coast. At its deepest point the MBNMS reaches down 12,713 feet, more than 2 miles. It is deeper than the Grand Canyon! It is the largest marine sanctuary-larger than Yosemite or Yellowstone National Park. It also has the Nation's largest kelp forest & one of North America's largest underwater canyons. It is the closest-to-shore
deep ocean environment in the continental United States. It is home to one of the most diverse marine eco systems in the world, including 33 species of marine mammals, 94 species of seabirds, 345 species of fishes & numerous invertebrates & plants. The average ocean temperature is 55 degrees F. The water is very cold even in the summer.
The climate is mild with an average temperature of 65 degrees all year round.
While I was there I got to visit the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium, went whale watching, hiking & a highlight was going skiing up north in Lake Tahoe. It was record breaking snow! It is possible to surf & ski in the same day in California. I also got to play the legendary golf course at Pebble Beach. In addition to visiting California, I hopped on a flight to Phoenix, Arizona & saw a lot of cactus plants. It was nice & warm. I have been so busy site seeing that I will not make it back to New York before the 11th of April but please know that I am on my way. It has been an amazing trip being in California & I will cherish the memories. Looking forward to seeing my friends at Town School.
Happy Travels,
Flat Stanley & The Staehle Family
Carolyn, Randy, Allie, Nico, Tristan & Ava
Nicholas's Flat Stanley arrived in California, America's "Golden State", just as Spring Break was coming to a close! He was able to travel with his cousins Sarah and Alec to San Diego, California's second largest city, where it was cool but sunny. He swam in the ocean and met a group of sea lions sun bathing on the rocks, he went water-biking all around the bay, and slid down the huge water slides at his hotel. When he returned back to Los Angeles, he got to take a trip to the happiest place in the world - Disneyland! He went on all of his favorite rides; the spinning teacups, Indiana Jones ride, Haunted Mansion, and many more! He had such a fun time visiting California, we hope Nicholas will do the same and come visit soon!!
ReplyDeleteLots of love from Cali,
Sarah
Well, Henry's Flat Stanley arrived in San Francisco on Monday, April 11 by U.S. mail. It was just in time as I was heading out the door to have lunch with a friend in the famous (Italian) North Beach neighborhood. We got one photo inside the restaurant, called Mario's Bohemian Cigar Store and Cafe. Great name for a restaurant, isn't it? Apparently I should have gotten the lasagna...
ReplyDeleteAfter lunch, before I took Stanley with me on my bicycle to Chinatown, my friend got a picture of us with the Coit Tower in the background. It's a building that a lady named Lillie Coit paid to have built to honor the firefighters of the city, who she loved and sometimes even helped fight fires with, as a young girl. She was quite a character, apparently.
On our travels through Chinatown I got a picture of Stanley in front of the Chinatown entrance gates, another with the Bay Bridge in the background, one with the tall and pointy TransAmerica pyramid behind him, and finally one with Stanley sitting in a bush with some pretty Chinatown buildings and paper lanterns in the background.
We didn't have a chance to get to the Golden Gate Bridge, since I'm leaving town tomorrow, but apparently it has enough steel wires in its cables to circle the earth at the equator 3.5 times. Is that unbelievable or what?!?
Also, not terribly far north of San Francisco, live the giant Redwood, or Sequoia trees. The redwood is the official state tree of California. Many of the giant redwoods in Sequoia National Park are more than 2,000 years old. How 'bout that?! Here in California we have almost all the different geographies in the world, including deserts and volcanoes, cliffs overlooking the beach and beautiful mountains.
And one more fact (since we were in Chinatown) according to one website I saw, San Francisco is believed to have the largest population of Asian people of any city outside Asia.
That's it, folks! Tomorrow I head for Washington, D.C. and will meet Henry's mom, who will bring Stanley back to your school next week. Hopefully we can show him around D.C. a little bit. I know he's pretty tired from all this traveling.
Love from the coolest city in the world, San Francisco,
Aunt Marci
